For 2015, Canon exceeded its goal of a 3 percent lifecycle CO2 emissions improvement index per product 1 over 2014 figures through efforts to make products more compact, lightweight, and energy efficient, as well as through improved efficiencies during manufacturing and transportation. The Company has also been recognized with multiple awards for its corporate environmental sustainability efforts.

Throughout the product lifecycle, Canon actively strives to reduce the environmental impact its activities have. The Sustainability Report highlights the environmental achievements of the imageRUNNER ADVANCE C3300 Series of A3 color multifunction devices, which were developed with the goal of reducing energy costs and CO2 emissions as compared with previous imageRUNNER ADVANCE models. The imageRUNNER ADVANCE C3300 Series reduces CO2 emissions compared to previous imageRUNNER ADVANCE models by incorporating bio-based plastics and recycled materials on certain exterior parts, and by designing housing parts that use fewer resources. Combined with energy consumption that’s among the lowest in its product category, the lifecycle CO2 emissions of the imageRUNNER ADVANCE C3300 Series have been reduced by approximately 23 percent as compared with previous models.

SmartWay® Excellence Award
Canon U.S.A. was honored with a 2015 SmartWay Excellence Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for serving as an industry leader in freight supply chain environmental performance and energy efficiency. Canon’s work to reduce transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions, including strategies such as modal shifting, load efficiency and encouraging its carriers to join the SmartWay Transport Partnership, have earned the Company this esteemed distinction.
ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year – Product Brand Owner Award
Canon was recognized by the EPA this year as a 2016 Partner of the Year for its contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by manufacturing energy-efficient products. In 2015, 100 percent of the products released in Canon’s five main product categories 2 eligible for the program were ENERGY STAR certified. Among Canon’s ENERGY STAR certified products are the new imageRUNNER ADVANCE 8500/6500 Series Multifunction Systems (MFPs) models.3
Call2Recycle Leader in Sustainability Award
Canon’s strong commitment to sustainability through battery collection and recycling was recognized with the 2015 Leader in Sustainability Award by Call2Recycle, Inc., a not-for-profit organization promoting battery recycling throughout the United States and Canada.
Among Canon’s various environmental sustainability initiatives is the Toner Cartridge Recycling Program, which marked its 25th anniversary in 2015, and now uses a process of sifting and melting to turn waste toner dust into pellets that can be used to make recycled products. Additionally, Canon launched an in-house solution to recycle waste toner liquid this past year.
Canon is also the proud sponsor of a variety of environmental conservation and corporate social responsibility activities. In 2017, Canon will celebrate 20 years supporting the Yellowstone Park Foundation, which provides educational programs and helps contribute to scientific research and conservation efforts in the United States for America’s first national park.
