SAN DIEGO – March 3, 2015 – gap intelligence, a values-led market research firm focused on the Information Technology, consumer electronics, imaging, and home appliance industries, recently added smartphones to its growing list of product categories.
Weekly smartphone competitive intelligence services cover over 1,000 device placements, a range of pricing data and promotion analysis across major carriers and big box retailers, in-store and online.
“The smartphone market is a fast-paced environment characterized by rapid product refresh cycles and strategic pricing moves, making it essential for industry players to have a clear and timely understanding of the opportunities that exist within this competitive landscape,” said gap intelligence Business Director Sarina Dahukey.
Here are a few trends from a current gap intelligence smartphone report:
In retail, pre-paid phones comprise 41% of the channel's placements, compared to the 59% held by phones that are sold with contract agreements.
Following the momentum of other retailers, warehouse club store Costco recently began phasing-out traditional two-year agreements, in favor of monthly installment-based pricing, making it easier for its shoppers to upgrade their devices at a quicker pace.
“Smartphones have become indispensable tools that are central to our connected lifestyles and represent the go-to devices for an ever-growing number of scenarios based upon their convenience and sophisticated connectivity,” said Scott Peterson, gap intelligence’s smartphone industry analyst. “We look forward to making a difference for clients by explaining why what happens today impacts business tomorrow.”
The move expands gap intelligence’s overall competitive intelligence services across nearly 25 industry segments such as televisions, home appliances, printers, notebooks, tablets, and cameras.
