Dell's new high-end monochrome hardware will be at a disadvantage going up against similar products from rival printer vendors. Although it is slightly less expensive to operate than the Lexmark T654dn, the Dell 5530dn costs $600 more than the $1,449 Lexmark unit.

HP has refreshed its entry-level line of personal single-function monochrome lasers with the introduction of the new LaserJet Pro P1100 series. The new P1102 base unit replaces the LaserJet P1005 and P1006, and the P1102w adds a wireless version to the low-end of HP's product portfolio.

HP has refreshed the upper-tier of its personal single-function monochrome LaserJets with the release of the LaserJet Pro P1566 and P1606 machines. The new units replace the popular P1505n machine. Currently, the less expensive P1566 is available exclusively in European and Asian markets.

On November 1, HP released its eight-model LaserJet Enterprise 600 M600 A4 monochrome laser printer series. The firm says the machines are designed to support medium to large workgroups with high-volume print environments. The new machines are based on the same basic print technology employed by their predecessors, the LaserJet P4000 family, which includes the LaserJet P4014, P4015 and P4515. The engine was also leveraged for HP’s new LaserJet Enterprise M4555 MFP family. The engine in the newer units has been enhanced with both HP FutureSmart firmware and a faster processor, and presumably, the new monochrome units will be featured in HP's growing MPS program.
OKI
We expect to see Oki dealers offer these new low-end machines in MPS packages. The two-piece toner cartridges should be easy to reverse engineer and we would expect to see compatible products available in the near future. Using third-party cartridges will allow dealers to offer low-cost leases.

Oki has revamped its lineup of single-function monochrome printers for small to mid-sized workgroups with the launch of the B700 line. We expect to see Oki dealers offer the B700 machines in MPS packages. In fact, Oki will offer a machine from the new line as part of its "MPS Hardware Series" of machines.
Ricoh
The SP 6330N ships with software that makes it ideal for MPS packages that require an A3 monochrome print-only device. To support remote printer and network management functions, it provides Ricoh's Web Image Monitor utility, which also allows end-users to monitor consumables levels remotely.
Xerox
In March, Xerox replaced the Phaser 4510 family with the new Phaser 4600/N, 4600/DN, 4600/DT, 4620/DN and 4620/DT. These new departmental monochrome laser printers are based on a new engine design, which Xerox claims makes them the fastest printers in their class.
