Summary |
|
HP has refreshed the upper-tier of its personal single-function monochrome LaserJets with the release of the LaserJet Pro P1566 and P1606 machines. The new units replace the popular P1505n machine. Currently, the less expensive P1566 is available exclusively in European and Asian markets. It lacks many features required by a workgroup, such as Ethernet connectivity and duplex printing, which are available on the P1606dn. The P1606dn is now shipping worldwide. Both new machines come with HP Smart Install technology, which automatically uploads the driver to Windows-based PCs from the device's NAND memory. They also offer HP Auto-On/Auto-Off technology. HP markets several connectivity options to make the P1606dn more attractive to business users.
The P1566 and the P1606dn ship with a 700-page startup cartridge and employ the new CE278A replacement cartridge. HP promotes the toner in the new cartridges as an energy saver, because it has a low melting point. Reviewing the Material Safety Data (MSD) Sheet for the 78A suggests that the composition of the toner in the new machine is similar to—if not the same as—the unique toner used in the CB436A, employed by the LaserJet P1505. Like the toner used in the previous machine, the toner in the new CE278A cartridge contains ferrite, which has magnetic characteristics that enhance the image quality of the final output. At 3.7 cents to print a page, the per-page costs are rather high for the new printer.
HP is now using the "LaserJet Pro" designation to indicate the printers and MFPs targeting SMBs. However, with their high operating costs, the "Pro" designator on these printers may be misleading. By offering standard Ethernet connectivity and duplexing, HP may be looking to make the higher-end 1606dn more attractive to office users and include it in MPS packages. However, with printing costs that exceed those of most business-class inkjet machines, it is unlikely to be popular with office users. It is much more likely that these will be SOHO machines. |
