Summary

Xerox 7800Xerox has replaced its aging Phaser 7760 tabloid color laser printer line with the new Phaser 7800 family. Unlike the older line, which was based on a laser print engine, the new 7800 series employs HiQ LED technology. According to Xerox, the HiQ LED print system provides enhanced performance over older color laser engines such as that used in the 7760. The firm claims its new LED technology offers better dot-to-dot density and more precise color registration while reducing energy consumption and noise. The new Phaser 7800 features other new technologies such as a newly designed printer controller. There are three models in the new 7800 lineup. The Phaser 7800DN is the base model, and it comes with 620 sheets of standard paper input, which is expandable to 2,180 sheets. The Phaser 7800DX adds a 2,520-sheet high-capacity tandem tray, boosting paper input to 3,140 sheets. The fully featured Phaser 7800GX ships with a 1,560-sheet three-tray module for a standard input capacity of 2,180 sheets. It features PhaserMatch 5.0 software and the PhaserMeter Color Measurement Device sourced from X-Rite.

The new Phaser 7800 series uses Xerox’s latest generation of EA-Eco toner, which the firm often markets as EA-Ultra Low Melt (EA-ULM) toner. Xerox has gradually been deploying this toner in a variety of devices ranging from entry-level printers to digital presses. All the consumables in the Phaser 7800 family are new. Xerox reduced the yield of the 7800 cartridges compared to the 7760 and raised the new cartridge pricing thereby increasing cost per page. However, the firm improved the life of the 35,000-page imaging unit found in the Phaser 7760 to 145,000 pages for the Phaser 7800.

The new 7800 device will face stiff competition in the market for A3 color printers. It will compete with the HP Color LaserJet CP6015 series, Lexmark’s new C950 series, OKI C9650 and the Ricoh Aficio SP C820DN and SP C821 DN. Although it is not the least expensive device in the pack to operate, we expect the machine will be popular with small businesses interested in printing high-quality color jobs in house. The Phaser 7800 line delivers impressive color output on a range of media at a relatively low acquisition price.
