 Samsung retired the SCX-4623FD and SCX-4623FW, which were released last year, and replaced the older machines with the new SCX-4729FD and SCX-4729FW. The SCX-4729FD is a monochrome print, copy, scan and fax laser device, and the SCX-4729FW adds wireless connectivity. Both new units are based on a new engine design and feature new supplies. With a top print speed of 29 pages per minute, Samsung's latest mono MFPs are 4 ppm faster than their predecessors and feature standard duplexing. The new units also employ a faster processor and have other enhancements, including a new industrial design, imporved rollers and more memory. Samsung is targeting the machines at a home and small office users as well as small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs).
The new SCX-4729FD and SCX-4729FW can accomodate one of two new one-piece toner cartridges. The standard yield MLT-D103S cartridge has the same 1,500-page yield as the MLT-D105S, which was employed by the older SCX-4623F and SCX-4623FW units. The new MLT-D103L high-yield SKU has a 2,500-page yield like the MLT-D105L, which was used in the older machines. The new cartridges also have the same street prices and per-page costs as the older machines.
There has been a considerable amount of activity at the low-end of the monochrome laser market for the past year, and the new SCX-4623FD and SCX-4623FW will face tough competition. Samsung has indicated that the SCX-4729 series will compete specifically against the Brother MFC-7460DN and MFC-7860DW and the HP LaserJet Pro M1536dnf. The company promotes its new mono MFPs machines as offering low acquisition and operating costs with higher print speeds, a faster processor, more memory and a higher monthly duty cycle than other machines in their class. The two new Samsung MFPs started shipping at the end of August and most will be placed through transactional sales via Samsung's retail channel and general distribution. Given the software that ships with the new units, however, it is clear Samsung is looking to place some of the machines through its dealers' MPS initatives. |
