Summary

HP LaserJet Pro 100 color MFP M175nwOn July 5, HP added the LaserJet Pro 100 color MFP M175nw to its lineup of A4 color laser MFPs. The new print, copy and scan MFP is an entry-level device featuring a compact design for the limited space on a home-office desktop or in a small office. It comes with standard Ethernet and wireless networking as well as HP’s ePrint technology, which supports mobile printing functions. HP's latest low-end MFP is based on the same multipass Canon color laser engine as the print-only LaserJet Pro CP1025nw, which was introduced last year. The LaserJet Pro 100 color MFP M175nw has the same print speeds as the CP1025nw - 17 black and white pages per minute (ppm) and 4 ppm for color jobs. The new MFP also is the first HP product to use the OEM's new naming scheme. Under the new naming convention, the first number denotes the family of the device, and the second number indicates the specific product in the family.

The LaserJet Pro 100 color MFP M175nw uses the same consumables that debuted in the CP1025nw, which include the CMYK HP 126A toner cartridges and a separate imaging drum. Most Canon engines use cartridges that include the toner and drum in one integrated unit. By separating the drum and toners, the footprint of the new machine could be kept small. The black cartridge yields 1,200 pages and each color cartridge has a 1,000-page yield. The imaging drum delivers 14,000 black pages or 7,000 color pages. The total cost per page of the toners and the drum is nearly 5 cents for a black and white page and over 22 cents for a color page.

We expect that HP's new color MFP will be popular because HP holds such a dominant position in the market. However, it is expensive to operate when compared to the competition. The Brother MFC- 9010CN, MFC-9120CN, and MFC- 9320CW, for example, have per page costs of 4.4 cents for black-and-white documents and 19.4 cents for color. The Samsung CLX-3185FW is even cheaper - 4.0 cents in black and 19.5 cents in color - as is the Dell 1355cn, which can print a black-only page for 3.5 cents and a color page for 18.5 cents.
