In March, Xerox replaced the Phaser 4510 family with the new Phaser 4600/N, 4600/DN, 4600/DT, 4620/DN and 4620/DT. These new departmental monochrome laser printers are based on a new engine design, which Xerox claims makes them the fastest printers in their class. The Phaser 4600 machines print at up to 55 pages per minute while the 4620 models are 65 ppm devices.The new printers support automatic duplex printing except for the Phaser 4600/DN, which comes with a duplex printing option. The Phaser 4600 and 4620 series are designed for high-volume enviroments and provide a 275,000-image monthly duty cycle. They have a 700 MHz processor, and can be connected wirelessly, via a 10/100/1000 BaseT Ethernet interface or using the USB 2.0 port.

Xerox's latest Phasers employ chemically-grown emulsion aggregation (EA) toner and two new replacement toner cartridges. The standard cartridge yields 13,000 pages and costs $199.99, while the $319.99 high-capacity cartridge yields 30,000 pages. The machines also use an 80,000-page drum cartridge that sells for $199.99, and a 150,000-page fuser kit, which costs $149.99. The lowest total cost per page for the Phaser 4600 and 4620 is approximately 1.42 cents including the price of the high-yield cartridge along with the cost of the drum and fuser units.

Even though the demand for monochrome laser printers has been in decline over recent years, the low total cost of ownership and high volume capacity of the Phaser 4600 and 4620 printers ought to make them popular. Xerox is marketing the machines as perfect for workgroups that are supported by a higher-end color device. Xerox's new departmental monochrome Phasers will face competitors like the Dell 5350dn and 5530dn, the HP LaserJet P4015 and P4515 series, and the Lexmark T654. In terms of cost per page, the 4600 and 4620 are more expensive than the Dell and HP printers in the same class, but the Xerox printers have the advantage of speed over the others. The prices for these products range from $1,099 for the Phaser 4600/N to $1,849 for the Phaser 4620/DT. They are currently available worldwide through Xerox direct sales, agents, resellers and dealers, and concessionaires.
